Arulpoomalai earned PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad and his focuses on heavy metal pollution in aquatic environment, risk assessment and its treatment. Heavy metals are carcinogenic, persistent longer time in environment and bio-accumulate in food chain. His research specifically focuses on heavy metal fractionation, mobility, bioavailability and soil-heavy metal interactions. He has worked on the management of heavy metal contaminated sediments by electro-kinetic remediation technique to bring down the heavy metals to permissible limit and worked on development of reactive transport model to predict the contaminant transport.
His current interest on improving waste water treatment facilities combined with bio-digestors and treatment of persistent organic pollutants.
