Dr. Andy Collins is a Assistant Professor in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Old Dominion University, a state university in Virginia, USA. He specializes in agent-based models & simulations and game theory applied in the operations research domain. Operations research is the study and practices of “giving analytical support to decision-makers.” As an Operations Researcher, Dr. Collins focus is on analyzing situations to find insights and potential efficiencies.
Dr. Collins has been able to provide technical expertise to a variety of domains including airline pricing, commercial organizational structures, critical infrastructure, defense analysis, evacuation modeling, farming decision-support, foreclosure modeling, garbage collection, insurgency modeling, manufacturing assessment, medical school scheduling, refugee movement, strategic group formation, street gang formation, terrorism risk, toll pricing, and traffic incident modeling. Given the breath of the domains, Dr. Collins considers himself a generalist. He has been involved in projects with funding amounts of approximately $6.0 million. He has published over 100 peer-review articles in a broad spectrum of domains. Dr. Collins passion is on the development and application of Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) and he has developed several research simulations including an award-winning investigation into the foreclosure contagion and pedestrian evacuation modeling. Dr. Collins whole career has been in Operations Research; before academia, Dr. Collins worked in the defense industry and was the simulation custodian to the world’s first large-scale peace support simulation.
