Emanuela Appetiti

A Sociologist with a specialization in Ethno-Anthropology, I have a strong interest in hunter-gatherers populations. For the past thirty years, I have focused my research on traditional medicines and Ethnobotany, dividing my interests between Australian Aboriginal traditional medicine, and the transmission of knowledge on the uses of medicinal plants in the ancient Mediterranean world.

Fluent in Italian (mother tongue), English, French, and Spanish, I am a co-founder and the President & CEO of the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions (Washington, DC, USA), and a co-founder of the UNESCO Chair "Plantae Medicinales Mediterraneae - Plants for Health in the Mediterranean Traditions", established in 2020 at the University of Salerno, Italy. This program deals with the knowledge of medicinal plants accumulated through the centuries in the Mediterranean region and aims to sum up the ancient knowledge about medicinal plants as a source of data for potential new applications and to develop awareness about this resource starting from Salerno and its medical school, which were the converging point of all the medical traditions developed across the Mediterranean World from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.

I work with my long-time research partner, husband, and fellow Ronin Scholar Alain Touwaide. Together, we have created the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions.

In October 2021, I have been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Pharmacognosy Institute, Department of Pharmacy, University of Illinois, Chicago, as one of the instructors of the new Ethnobotany course entitled "Plant Medicine from Rainforest to Metropolis – A Legacy for the Future", organized by UIC Pharmacognosy Institute for the Honors College of this University. More recently, I have become an Affiliate Scholar at OU - Department of History of Science, Technology, and Medicine (January 2022), and Adjunct Fellow in the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine within the Faculty of Health, Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, Australia (May 2022), and a Research Associate at the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University, Washington DC (May 2023).

I have been a Scientific Program Specialist in the Department of Botany of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (2005-2011) and before, in the same department, a Research Collaborator (2000-2004).

I am a member of the Honorary Advisory Board of the Lloyd Library and Museum in Cincinnati, OH, of the Editorial Boards of ISIS-Current Bibliography, Ethnobotany Research and Applications (ERA), and of the book collection Ciências e Culturas (Science and Cultures), Coimbra University Press (Portugal); a member of the Scientific Committee of the Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences and of the Executive Committee of the International Society for Phytocosmetic Science (IPEC).

I have been the Editor of the quarterly e-newsletter of the International Society for the History of Medicine from its creation in 2014 until 2018.
