My research interests focus on civil society in Japan and the relation between societal groups and the state. I have initially studied Japanese language and linguistics before having moved to Japanese politics and international relations. I received my doctoral degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Sheffield, UK. My doctoral research focused on the advocacy activities of the Japanese Rescue Movement (1997-2006) and to what extent they impacted Japanese foreign policy toward North Korea. Presently, I have extended my interest in civil society across disciplines and look at how it can foster social inclusion with respect to migrants.
