I am a scientist who works in the areas of computational linguistics, machine learning, artificial life, evolutionary computation, philosophy, and mathematics. Most of my work has been in computational linguistics, but recently my interests have turned to understanding the nature of evolution, by computational simulations of evolution (as in artificial life) and by the statistical analysis of the evolution of written language (applying the methods of computational linguistics to historical linguistics). My current research focus is open-ended evolution: evolution that generates a continuous stream of creative solutions to problems, without stagnating. The question that   interests me most is, why is it that biological and cultural evolution seem to be open-ended, but evolution in artificial life seems to eventually stagnate?
