Areas of interest: Social Class, Higher Education, Comparative-Historical Sociology, Culture.
After completing my Ph.D. in Sociology at Michigan State University, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, and a Research Officer at the Institute of Education, University of London.
I am currently an Independent Scholar, researching social class and the cultural components of social reproduction within contexts such as education, the service/retail workplace, and leisure. More recently my interests have turned to the role of intellectuals in late 19th to mid 20th C. US and the UK; looking at why the adult liberal education movement was more strongly linked to academia and to the labour movement in the United Kingdom. I am keen to explore the practical implications of this historical record in order to raise standards in non-vocational lifelong learning as well as to improve the quality of public intellectual life.
